A note at the bottom orders Jones to report to the medical director of the department to which he is assigned, and is signed by Samuel P. Moore as the Confederate Surgeon General. Apparently written after Jones had been paroled and exchanged after his capture at Fort Donelson. Written on Confederate States of America War Department Stationary.

Forty eight long letters written while on the Sully Expedition to put down the Sioux uprising, under the orders of Abraham Lincoln. Private Alden, a seventeen year old Iowan, wrote this first-hand account mostly to his family. He discusses hand to hand combat with Indians, rescuing immigrants on the overland trail, gold mining, the capture of a Sioux chief's feathered head dress, and the wounding and death of a soldier. This document commutes the sentence of Frank Hardy, who was convicted of first degree murder. Frank Hardy was to be hanged on 6 May 1870, and on 27 April 1870 Rutherford B. Hayes altered his sentence to life imprisonment. Hayes signed as governor of Ohio. Sealed in mylar, dimensions of the document and the mylar are 45.5 x 37.1 cm.

One letter from Roger Brooke Taney representing an enslaver, Richard Cromwell who complained that John Shotts had assaulted Joe, a man enslaved by Taney, on October 28, 1802 in Frederick County, Maryland. Taney claimed that Shotts "with force of arms to wit swords[,] Knives, Cudgels, shovels[,] clubs and fists upon a certain Negro man named Joe the slave of him the said Richard Cromwell an assault did make ... and there beat wound and evilly treat [him]." Jokingly says his life has become wrapped up in books, "I have the Vanity to claim a distant remote kindred to the Family of Searches ... But this drop of Searches blood has drawn up on me a flood of Volumes from all quarters." Says his granddaughter is reading to him from "Tuckers Vision," a book Colman loaned Adams.
