Discusses gun boats being used by Grant in attack on Fort Henry. Informs McClellan "Gun boats supplied with temporary crews and in the the field. Mortar boats of no use at present. Enlistments for regular crews going on rapidly. Bombardment of Fort Henry now going on. our Troops have landed three miles below." Writing from his headquarters in St. Louis, Halleck did not know that the bombardment would not begin until the next day, 6 February 1862. The gunboats would play a key role in the Union victory at Fort Henry. Written on Department of the Missouri station.
