A print of a photograph showing a small group of Union soldiers stand on the fort's parapet. Much of the photograph shows the dirt, ground, and devastated vegetation on the hill. Lengthy inscription on verso: "Position of Fort Hill (Rebel) blown up and assaulted June 25th 1863 by the 45th Ill. Infy. vols. In this assault which was successful Lt. Col. A print of a photograph showing two trains running on tracks through a railroad depot near Vicksburg, MS. Title taken from inscription on recto. This depot is on the Vicksburg & Jackson line. Until Gen. Grant cut off the rail link, this was the destination of the supplies the Confederates stockpiled to resist the Federal seige. Stamp of French & Co. on recto. On verso graphite inscription reads "RR depot" and is stamped "Kean Archives, Phila."

Title: [Ironclad USS Louisville outside Vicksburg]

A print of a photograph of the USS Louisville, a City-class ironclad gunboat laid down in September of 1861. Many sailors and/or officers can be see standing on the deck, the Louisville had a crew of 251. Inscription on recto: "Louisville iron clad gun boat 12 guns. Mississippi Squadron, 1864." The Louisville actually had at 14 guns at any point during the war, including all of 1864. Vicksburg looms in the backgorund. Note this image has been mounted over an oval photograph of a soldier.

A print of a photograph of the Old Courthouse of Warren County, in Vicksburg, MS. Title taken from inscription on recto. A group of emancipated enslaved people are gathered near a brick structure to the left of the court house. Union soldiers, cavalry, and an artillery gun can be seen surrounding the court house. Stamp of "French & Co., photographers, Vicksburg, Miss." on recto. Despite the claims of the title, there is very little damage present on the building itself. The building is still standing as of 2017 and is preserved as a museum.

A print of a photograph of a camp of Confederate soldiers near Vicksburg, MS. Title taken from inscription on recto. Stamp of "French & Co., photographers, Vicksburg, Miss." Soldiers visible throughout camp, some in small formations, others standing individually. Entrenchments and shebangs are visible in the foreground. Soldiers' barracks in background and river is visible to the left. The 20th Mississippi was stationed at Vicksburg for most of the siege.

Image of Vicksburg company posed in front of Warren County Court House. Title taken from inscription on recto. Stamp of "French & Co., photographers, Vicksburg, Miss." also visible on lower right corner of image. A highly visible structure throughout the county, the Warren County Court House became a popular visitation site for Federal soldiers who had set seige to Vicksburg for months. Some soldiers are wearing infantry sack coats, not artillery, and have black felt hats (called "Hardee hats"), common among Western Federal troops. A print of a photograph of a three-story building in Vicksburg, MS. The Mississippi River can be seen in the background beyond the rest of the city. Title taken from inscription on recto. Stamp of "French & Co., photographers, Vicksburg, Miss." Men posed outside the building and someone standing in the left most bottom window. The building was constructed in 1853 and used as a hospital until 1873 (taken over by the Marines after the end of the siege in 1863). Demolished in 1892. Print is mounted at an angle to the backing material.

A print of a photograph of a large group of soldiers posed in front of tents. Some men in the group wear civilan dress. The second line of a small sign in the middle of the image appears to read "Signal Corps." A road and a long horse rail [fence] are in the foreground of the image, while what appears to be an orchard stands in the background. Graphite inscription on verso: "Def[enses] of Wash[ington]. Gardner XXX 732." Print is unmounted. The US Army Signal Corps was established on March 3rd, 1863 so the photograph has to date from after that.

A print of a photograph of General William Hoffman and three others. Hoffman is the man leaning against the banister on the right hand side of the image. He and two other men are standing on the steps of the building beneath a sign reading: "Office of the Commissary General of Prisoners." The office itself was located in Washington, D.C. at F St. and 20th St. NW. The address on the building reads "148." A fourth man peers out the window of the building. Hoffman was in charge throughout the entire war of finding accomodations for Confederate prisoners that would fit the small budget he himself…

A print of a photograph of a serious of long, thin buildings arranged in a row. The cavalry depots were necessary to house and train the mounts for the Union armies. A few tents and clothes drying on a clothes line can be seen in the foreground in front of the first row of stables. Graphite inscriptions on verso: "defenses of Wash" and "XXX 17."

A print of nine Union officers. Photo was most likely taken in Washington. Two women peer from a window on the left hand side of the image. A young boy wearing a cap sits in front of the men. The soldier to the far left holds a bugle, while the soldier to the far right wears a gray uniform, possibly a state guard or local militia uniform. Present are a colonel or major (second from right upper row) and 1st lieutenant (upper row right-most). Inscription on verso: "Gardner XXXI 875."

A print of a photograph of a large group of civilians. The assemblage is posed in front of three long, white government shops. Most are probably workers employed in the buildings by the government. Black laborers wearing aprons and holding tools are on the far left of the image. A policeman stands eighth from the right. Washington became a major center for army services during the war. A print of a photograph of the Washington, DC headquarters of Brigadier General Hardin. Brigadier General Martin D. Hardin put was in command ofthe defenses of Washington from 1864 to the end of the war. He is just left of the tree on the corner, missing the left arm he lost in Confederate guerrilla ambush. The glass of the lamp post on the corner reads "19th Street West." The headquarters was located at the intersection of 19th St. NW and Pennsylvania Ave. The crowd consists mainly of well dressed civilian men and women with a few soldiers. Armaments wagons identified as belonging to the First, Second and Third Batteries of the Excelsior Brigade [2nd brigade, 2nd corps]. The Excelsior Brigade originated entirelly from the state of New York. Excelsior is the motto of the state. One soldier leans against tree in the middle of the photograph and two other soldiers and a dog pose near one the cannons on the left hand side of the photograph. Taken from Gardner's "Photographic Sketchbook, Vol II. No. 92" with text accompanying panel. Also includes text description page. The ruins of the once-great, eight acre Haxalll's Flour Mill stand at right. The hydropowered mill burned in the large fire that consumed thrity squares of the business section of Richmond. Crenshaw's Mill across the canal and the wooden shops on the right were preserved. The canal was used to relieve supplying pressures on the stressed Confederate rail roads. Severak civilians pose on the bridge.
