Title: to Robert Livingston, Jr. re: examining rivers and forts

The letter is signed by both Gilbert Livingston and William Paulding. Gilbert writes that he has just returned from "the Forts" where he examined the rivers at Montgomery and Constitution, and has found that the site at Constitution is preferable for settling a fort. Both Gilbert and William Paulding send Robert, Jr. instructions for making an iron chain from his iron works; and add that the Forts are in high spirits, but low on artillery.

He complains that he is troubled by his family; and notes that their Congress has passed a resolution that agrees to allow George Washingston to vacate the city when ever he judges it appropriate. George Clinton informs Robert, Jr. of his brother's military actions, and states that the British set a fire in New York, which has caused only a small amount of damage. He explains that there is a great deal of tension between British soldiers and the Hessians over access to lodging and plunder, and also notes the need for further military regiments in New York.

They have therefore sent Coll. Stuart "who will lay before you a List of such Cannon and Stores as are wanted; which we hope, may be procured on just and equitable Terms, and timely enough to be transported to General Schuyler before the Winter."
