Printed by the Coast Survey Office, compiled by Nicholson, and lithographed by Charles G. Krebs. Depicts eastern Virginia, Maryland and Delaware with portions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and North Carolina. Shows rail lines, rivers, and other features in color. This item accompanied the commission of Brig. Gen. Nathaniel C. McLean (see GLC01740.01). Printed under the authority of Alexander Dallas Bache, superintendent of the United States Coast Survey Office. Appears to be a chromolithograph with some hand re-touching, particularly to railroad lines.

Contains a leave of absence granted to N. McLean during the Civil War (.03), and a biographical sketch of John McLean (.04).

Title: to John Brown

Madison writes to Brown, then a Kentucky lawyer and later a senator, to promise further communication of his thoughts on making Kentucky a state. Also comments cryptically, because he has no cypher established with Brown, about his sentiments regarding "our confidential conversation just before your departure." Indicates that he has anticipated "every political calamity," probably referring to Spain's efforts to get Kentucky to become an independent state. Includes two resolutions passed by Congress on September 16, 1788 relating to American rights to the Mississippi River.

Madison sends Brown, a former Kentucky senator, a copy of letter from Madison to Mann Butler. The copy, dated October 11, 1834, provides a recollection of the 1788 correspondence between Madison and Brown regarding Spain's efforts to get Kentucky to become an independent state. It also attests to the friendship between Madison and Brown and directs Butler, who was writing about the period, to other sources.

Letter written from his estate, Oak Hill, in Virginia. One full length seated engraving of James Monroe included.

Pemberton, Hunt, and Pleasants were Quakers protesting their seizure and pending exile to Virginia because of suspected Loyalist sympathy. Printed by Robert Bell as the British army approached Philadelphia. Reference material: Evans 15498.

Title continues: "the following is a copy of a paper we received at half past four o'clock this afternoon, and we have since received orders to prepare for our banishment to-morrow." Reprints the resolutions issued by Secretary of the Supreme Executive Council Timothy Matlack that banishes twenty-two individuals to Virginia on suspicion of being Loyalist sympathizers. Page 2 includes the "Remonstrance and protest of the subscribers," which charges that the resolutions are arbitrary and unlawful. Evans 15501.
