Blair, a seaman aboard the United States Ship Peacock, apologizes to his sister Elizabeth for not writing sooner. Informs Elizabeth that Navy orders prevent him from telling her details about his location, but mentions the ship is close to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A seal was torn from this document, causing text loss.

Writes to his sister from the United States Ship Peacock. States that Captain William L. Hudson of the Peacock supported him in an affaire d'honour. Informs Elizabeth that women he met at a Ball in Valparaiso, Chile perceive Americans as "the people who struck the first blow for Liberty in the New World." States that Captain Charles Wilkes, leader of the Peacock and other vessels on the expedition, wrote for his warrant. Requests Elizabeth to give his love to family and friends in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Norfolk, Virginia.

States that his friends have influenced him to accept it even though he was planning on moving to Florida and spending time with him family. Remarks, "But all my plans have now been disarranged and I may be remanded to two years more of confinement and hard labor."

Mentions being disappointed that he had to cancel a fishing trip with Judge Stilwell.

In a description of the events of his life, discusses his imprisonment in Canada. After his imprisonment, he was shot by John Garland, an officer in the Royal Navy, for refusing to fight against the United States in the 10 September 1813 Battle of Lake Erie. Refers to the battle as "Perry's Battle," after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. Claims that he was the son of Revolutionary War soldier Simon Crosby. States that he resides in Adams County, Wisconsin. This document is accompanied by a newspaper clipping containing Crosby's obituary. Date estimated based on references within the note.

In regard to the treatment of Indians, he comments that "There are so many covert as well [as] open schemes to undermine the Indians of every vestige of the few rights remaining to them that it is a herculean task to follow them let alone battling with them." Thanks Bryant for organizing an Indian Association to protect their interests. Also comments on temporary aspect of names among the Iroquois, indicating that his old name "Hasanoanda" is no longer spoken or even remembered since his own…
