Dated "Saturday morning." Beauregard encloses a note (not included) from "a gentleman who had offered me that servant girl & her family." Two of the family recently died, and though Beauregard regrets their death, he is "glad it has occurred before they had been bought." Doswell was likely a financial agent and/or merchant in New Orleans.

After June 1863, when the regiment was organized in LaGrange, Tenn. The photographs were originally in a photo album. The 59th was originally called the 1st US Tennessee Vols. (African Descent) and 1st West Tenn. Inf. Regt (African Descent). Some of the photographs are signed with homes noted. (The Grant photograph dates from 1864, perhaps when the album was collected.)

Created by Currier as a lithograph of the painting by John Trumbull, which hangs in the U.S. Capital Building. Signature in lower right corner of lithograph says "O. Knursch 1852." Fine print below the picture says "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1852 by N. Currier, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Southern District N.Y." Written by Brigadier General Pulaski, a Polish count, as commander of his independent cavalry brigade to a Colonel Hoppé as Quartermaster General in Easton, Pennsylvania. Pulaski was soliciting help for the creation of what would become the "Pulaski Legion." Asks Hoppé to "Render all the Services which will Lay in your Power to Mr. Couch Colonel of My Legion, if he should be in the Case to Desire some things of you."

Written in French by a Captain Gallais of the corsair La Laure to First Consul of French Republic Napoleon Bonaparte. Translation in collateral file. Gallais is offering his opinion on how the French government should handle American merchant ships that previously engaged in battle with French ships under the new treaty, the Convention of Mortefontaine, which was signed in October 1800. Says treaty is only applicable retroactively to ships with irregularities in their papers, not to ships engaged in combat. Ohio governor Chase writes to his sister Charlotte. Discusses her visiting him in Columbus, Ohio, where he was serving as governor. Speaks of a disagreement of opinion with Justice John McLean but still holds him in high esteem and respect. He is still in support of him for president. Regrets that McLean no longer considers him a friend. Chase supported Supreme Court Justice McLean over Fremont in the election of 1856. Written on Executive Department, State of Ohio stationery.

Explains that his daughter "would be very glad to contribute by a song to the laudable purpose you have in view" if someone could be sent to rehearse with her beforehand. Written at Davis's home, Beauvoir.

Confederate Major General Palmer gives a detailed report of the Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina, which occurred on 19-21 March 1865. Describes his brigade's movements and tactics, and lists losses from his brigade including captured, wounded, and killed. "My losses during the fight were 13 killed, 113 wounded, & 53 captured, making in all 179. The enemy's loss I am satisfied was greater, especially in killed." Matthew Seutter, following Jansson and Nicholas Visscher. Engraved map, handcolored. The map shows the back-and-forth tussle between the Dutch and English over New York and New Jersey, and uses both sets of place names. Cartouche shows New York City (New Amsterdam) (incolored). The figures surrounding the cartouche include enslaved people laboring with other people, present produce to a seated monarch who may be George II. See R. V. Address to Chief Grand Pest of the Osage Indians residing on the Arkansas River, with a French translation on p. 2. Advises Grand Pest "of the approach of the Son of Your Great Father" (Zebulon Pike) and urges him to "Open Your ears to the good council of the Great Warrior...he will put you in the path of wisdom, & never deceive you." The letter was delivered by General James Wilkinson's son, Pike's second in command. General James Wilkinson, the governor of Louisiana, had sent Lieutenant Pike on this mission to pacify the Indians.
