A letter entailing the call for volunteers and the initial experience of a group of men who answered that call. The author refers to this group of men as a "band of brothers" acting "for the preservation of of ourself and country." The author also mentions a lack of blankets and utensils, but that "like good soldiers," they did not complain. The corners of the letter are torn and the there is some content loss at the top of the page due to discoloration and fading.

In his letter, Bailey details the Battle of Lake Champlain in Vermont and the capture of Captain Merrick and thirty-three soldiers from his company. He also writes about British soldiers defecting and gains made by the American forces. The Battle of Lake Champlain is also known as the Battle of Plattsburgh.

The first is a letter from Robert and Maley Bayley to their son informing him of their troubles, including the loss of their cattle and their subsequent inability to pay for bread until the corn crop becomes ready to sell. The second letter is from John Bayley to his brother Bailey inquiring about his health and asking Jacob Bailey to write to him. The author accidently came across a young deserter named Samuel Young and was in the process of taking him back to camp when the author was accost by a sergeant named Whitney. On the back of his document is a side note about the amount of money needed for buckles and the statement "To Money Reed 5.00."
