Horace B. Gardner writes to Nellie Boardman from Fort Albany, where he is stationed with the 14th regiment. After writing that he has never heard her name before, he decribes his Fourth of July celebration, a picnic and fireworks. He writes about the fort and camp life. Gardner identifies the "Sutler" as the worst enemy to the soldiers, listing the high prices of his goods. This letter is on McClellan lettersheet with McClellan patriotic image envelope. Written at Fort Frederick (also known as Fort Albany).

Responding to her suggestion that a draft may be required to fill the Massachusetts quota, he discusses the value of fighting in defense of his country and her laws. Gardner writes of the 14th Regiment's potential move to Richmond, and of his kind Captain and Lieutenant. He discusses the food available to the soldiers and explains that farmers come to camp to trade milk for bread. Horace B. Gardner writes to Nellie Boardman, referring to an ambrotype of himself that he includes with the letter. He writes of his previous night's guard duty, and he describes Warren H. Knights's attempted, and two other soldiers' succesful, desertions. Gardner describes a duel between a Union officer and a civilian. He says that his regiment has been put in General Pope's division and must be ready to move at any time. This letter is on plain paper with multicolor Magnus White House Views patriotic envelope. The diary includes descriptions of regiment's progress and moves, descriptions of various battles (including Vicksburg, Gettysburg, and Port Hudson), and information about camp life and food rations. He discusses Northern and Southern war politics, including the Emancipation Proclamation and draft riots. The diary also includes discussions of virtues, religion, and self-improvement. It is primarily written in pencil and has some touch-ups.
