A personal philosophy Guest tried to live by, much of it dealing with ethics and decorum: "... to be strict with myself, but patient and lenient with others; to give the advantage , but never to ask for it; to be kindly to all, but kindlier to the less fortunate..." Guest admits he has not always been able to live up to his high standards, but believes trying to live by these rules has greatly enriched his life.

Hunt writes in response to a question about Jesus' racial identity. Hunt says that for painters, even if the traditional ideal of Jesus with blue/grey eyes and red/brown hair isn't truest, it is still best. However, he does believe the traditional ideal is truest, because it has Jewish traits similar to Jesus' ancestor, David. He also believes that a "dark person" could not possess Jesus' "inflexible and steady courage...in such transcendent degree." He describes the forged letter of Lentulus as ignorant, vulgar, and wrong.

While criticising an article written by Hayman (evidently about "The Perennial Philosophy"), Huxley reveals his thoughts on religion. He asserts that God should not be exploited for personal gain, as the Christian Scientists do. He also argues about using the word personal to describe spirituality and makes an argument for why God, Jesus, and man's relationships with them should be termed as suprapersonal. In the post script he apologizes if his letter seems "impious or presumptuous." With holograph postscript. Autograph notes of recipient in black ink.

Johnson was a member of the 25th Illinois Volunteer infantry, Company H.
