He heard the information in a speech given on the floor of the House of Representatives by Charles F. Scott. The reply, in which Cleveland asserts that "Of course the statement is absolutely false," is written on Harris's original letter. Harris was a reporter at the Senate press gallery.

On the inside page appears a draft of a letter from a woman named Dorcas Clark to her mother, which indicates that she is well and gives love to relatives. Also requests that her mother come down "as soon as the ground is settled." On the other inside page and on the address leaf there is some arithmetic.
