Said one of the "girls " told her that her husband had been stationed at Fort Hamilton [Brooklyn] and she never knew it when he was there and never got to see him. So that their situation was better, really. She accepts that she will probably not see Moe because "of the ways of war."

Sylvia saw a picture of her brother Alvin, who is still in Tennessee, but will probably be leaving soon. Reports that Leslie Smith is disgusted with the Royal Maritime Service, because they wanted to ship him back out too soon, after being injured. The Union helped him get a passport to Canada. He is through with the English Navy and will ship out from Canada in a Canadian ship. Tells Moe to "say the word" and she will join the American Red Cross Overseas in England.

Sylvia says "I have learned that I can live independently- but only because you are always there- + I have discovered that although we were as close as two people could possibly be - I was an independent individual- with freedom as to thinking... + freedom of action- + likes + dislikes- I could go where + when I wished (tho I wished most often to be with you)." She is surprised when he tells her that her letters have not been censored.

In a humorous letter, chastizes Bassett, his brother-in-law, for not attending church. States "strange it is that you will be so blind to truth that the enlightening sounds of the Gospel can not reach your Ear, nor no Examples awaken you to a sense of Goodness ..." Discusses the condition of the tobacco crops, claiming that they are "assailed by every villainous worm that has had an existence since the days of Noah." Contains text loss and water stain. Address is included on a separate leaf.

Countersigned by Timothy Pickering as Secretary of State. Pardons Daniel Hamilton, William Miller, Richard Holcroft, Ebenezer Gallagher, William Hannah, Peter Lisle, David Lock, Alexander Fulton, Samuel Hannah and Thomas Spiers. Includes the comment: "It is ever my desire to temper the administration of justice with a reasonable extension of mercy." This was one of Washington's last official acts as president. The pardon was signed on his final day in office. Has a large paper seal.
