Z. Flitner writes to his daughter after reaching Boston, Massachusetts to tell her about their trip thus far. Flitner, his wife, and Ford took a boat up to Boston and both his wife and Ford were very seasick the first day and night of the trip. Both women recovered and spent most of the rest of the boat ride sewing. Flitner directs his daughter to sent her letters to Captain J. Bailey. Ford is possibly a nickname for Flora.

Flitner also mentions a recent snow storm, and that she is glad that her daughter lives so near the school, indicating that her daughter was in attendance at the time this letter was written.

Flitner also apologizes for his inability to give a detailed description of his present location, citing that he has rarely been off the ship to explore the area, which he calls Gotenburg. The top right corner of the letter is missing resulting in the last number in the year being lost. What remains is August 8, 186.

David Flitner writes to his brother to thank him for his offer to send money, but declines the offer. Flitner goes on to talk about how close to being a beggar he was the previous fall and how his brother Samuel lent him money and he would soon be able to pay him back. The date on this letter does not include a year.

J. Henry Flitner writes a letter to his sister describing the voyage of him and their father to Mobile Bay in Alabama. Flitner writes that for the first fifteen days of the voyage the weather was very bad and they were not able to reach their original destination of Savanah, Georgia. Flitner also writes about sharks and porpoises following the vessel.

Flitner notes that while the weather has been poor, he is still in high spirts and really enjoys life onboard the ship working as a merchant with their father.
