Knox writes to his wife from a camp outside Petersburg, Virginia. Expresses deep love and longing for her. Comments how much he misses her kisses and dancing with her. Reports he has not seen a lady in six months except on the streets of Petersburg through a "glass." Discusses when he should return home after being mustered out on 12 March 1865. Complains he has no blankets, socks or proper fitting shirts. Comments on President Abraham Lincoln's re-election and the demise of the Democratic party.

Says he repaired a neckband and a wristband and it took him three hours to do it. Mentions considerable artillery firing on their lines the past four days. Complains the rebels have drove in the picket lines.

States there is plenty of good whiskey available to them for two dollars seventy five cents per gallon. Writes about a visit with his "...coloured servant William..." Says they discussed religion and William is "...a modle of a Christian man." Mentions a possible move to Wilmington, Virginia. Informs of constant shelling and dangerous conditions.

Informs of his nice quarters. Letter mentions only day and year but no month.

Comments it is raining and the trip back to his regiment will be difficult, "...but a soldier has to go rain or shine." Letter is very fragile with a small hole and an emblem.

Comments on the negotiations with Indian tribes and the treaties they are trying to create. Also discusses the New York chapter of the "Society," referring to the Society of the Cincinnati. Consists of two letters. The first, sent 20 July 1785, is marked as a copy. In the letter, Killingley, Green, & Son congratulate William Knox on his restored health and his planned return to America. They express assurance that William will pay the money he owes. They inform William that they would like to supply him in the future if he chooses to keep hosiery among his other merchandise. The second letter, on verso, is written 28 January 1786. In this letter, the firm congratulates William on his safe arrival at Boston, and implores him to settle his account.
