A fine personal letter, written aboard the steamboat "Malta" on the Missouri River, commenting on various topics to his friend, Jack MacKay, whom he met at West Point. Lee comments on the Seminole War that "It is high time that they abandoned it...." Lee tells of his family's summer vacation in the Blue Ridge Mountains and his work in Missouri "I have been studying mud and water," working at St. Louis harbor and pulling snags from the Missouri River.

Awaiting news of peace talks and personal advice regarding impossibility of selling a slave. Madison notes that while European newspapers "teem with paragraphs relative to pacific negotiations" but past British policy "should always restrain our hopes of peace from circumscribing our preparations for war." In July 1782 the Earl of Sherlburne took over the ministry and in early August he agreed to enter formal negotiations with the Americans. Collection of materials written to Rene and Frank Stockdale, with a signed and dated 3-star general's flag (54 x 72.4 cm). The letters, written to two personal friends in Britain during the last eighteen months of World War II, chronicle Patton as his Third Army swept through Italy, France and Germany.
