First American edition of this important economic work. Translation of French work. Ownership signature of Archibald Austin, a Virginia lawyer who was retained sometimes by Jefferson. The translation from the original French was gone over and corrected by Thomas Jefferson, whose letter of transmittal 25 October 1818 to Milligan (the publisher) is printed in the prefatory material. Apparently an unused bill of sale for the disposal of Jefferson's slaves by Thomas Jefferson Randolph, Jefferson's grandson and executor of his will. "Know all men by these presents, that I, Thomas J. Randolph, Executor of Thomas Jefferson... have bargained and sold, and by these presents do bargain and sell to the said [blank] certain [blank] negro slave [blank], named [blank] late the property of Thomas Jefferson, deceased."

Stewart, Commissary to the Army, is ordered by Washington to provide "four days provisions" to enable a surprise attack on the British. General Benjamin Lincoln led the attack down the Hudson River, but the British were alerted, fortified their positions on the Harlem River, and fended off the attack. In the handwriting of Washington's military secretary and aide-de-camp Tench Tilghman.

Washington writes on behalf of his nephew, Corbin Washington, who "is inclined to enter into a Mercantile walk of life." Washington says he knows little of Corbin but asks his former aide Tilghman "if it would be convenient for you to take him into your counting House, and immediately under your eye...." Tilghman died later this year.
