Although inscription on verso reads, "Ruins of Summit House," the image is clearly of the Mumma homestead at Sharpsburg [Antietam], Md. The image has also been identified by Frassanito in his book "Antietam" as "Ruins of the Mumma house" and was taken by Gardner on either 9/19/62 or 9/20/62. The house was ordered to be burned by Confederates fearing that Federal forces would occupy the buildings for sharpshooting. Numeric Notation on verso: "142."

A long white Government Repair Shop stretches across the image with a large group of workers standing on the wooden sidewalk out front. Two men are off by themselves, one of whom appears to be either a soldier or policeman, on the right side of the image near a blurry figure in civilian clothes. Washington became a major center for army services during the war. Taken by O'Sullivan. Frassanito states that this is the earliest known photograph of the gatehouse after the battle. The artillery earthworks occupied by Stewart's Battery B, 4th U.S. Arty. can be seen in the foreground. Seated in the wagon that is on the Baltimore Pike are a few of the many civilians that would flock to the battlefield shortly after the fighting was over. See GLC 5111.01.0225, .0305
