Title: to the Quartermaster at Morristown, New Jersey

Written by Major Shaw of Major General Henry Knox's staff to the Quartermaster at Morristown, New Jersey. Reports that on the march north from Burlington, New Jersey to New Windsor, New York, one of Knox's wagon horses "foundered" in such a way to make it impossible for her to continue. Says she was a grey mare and that she was left with a John Salter of Pompton, New Jersey, less than a mile from the Yellow House Tavern. Wants the quartermaster to pay the expense of recovering the mare so she can be put to public use.

Writes, "General Knox desires me to inform you, that a Conductor, or Some person in your department who was lately at the Magazine near Head Quarters broke open the lock, & left the door tied with a string. He wishes you to have it secured without a moments delay, as the Stores are much exposed and bring the person with you to his quarters on Wednesday Morning at ten oclock."

In the handwriting of Captain Peirce of the artillery, most likely John Peirce, son of Isaac Peirce and younger brother of Joseph. Chart for supplies wanted at different posts on the Mohawk River in New York. Divided into five columns: for 12 pounder, for 7 pdr, for 6 pounds, for 3 pounder, and sundry articles. The cannons need flannel and paper cartridges as well as caps, cylinders, grape shot, and round shot. The sundry articles include lead aprons, twine, thread, yard, paper, and matches. Writes, "All Issuing Commissaries are hereby directed to request the Commanding Officers of Regiments, Detachments, and Smaller Parties, to make regular Returns on clear paper, and large enough to take proper receipts thereon." Adds, "Received of the Contractors for the moving Army, one hundred Rations in full of all species for the above Return."

In the hand of Samuel Shaw. Writes on behalf of the officers of the Massachusetts line that the Massachusetts state legislature has, following the direction of Congress, settled payment with the officers for the years 1779 and 1780, but have not yet made payments for the year 1781. The officers request that the legislature send a committee to camp to settle payment with the officers, because officers need to be in camp in case a campaign happens at a moment's notice. Title: [Remarks on Treaty with the Creek Nation]

Discusses U.S. relations with the Creek Indians. States, "The treaty with the Creek nation of Indians is a new and honorable evidence of the vigilance and wisdom of the [executive] of the U.S." Mentions the Oconee River in Georgia and possibly refers to the Treaty of New York. This may have been a speech drafted by Knox. See GLC02437.09971 for related documents.

"1790" is written at the top of page one and struck. Mentions General Samuel Waldo's Muscongus Patent, a patent granting Waldo trade with Native Americans in present-day Maine. Flucker, who was married to Waldo's daughter Hannah, was granted 2/5 of the Muscongus Patent. Appraised 4 September 1788 by David Sales, Waterman Thomas, and [William] Pendleton. Grants full power of attorney to Thomas Longman of Paternoster Row, London, to recover a bond from Hannah Harwood, one of the executors of the late Hannah Waldo Flucker's estate. Indicates that the bond was given to Francis Waldo in March 1774 by Thomas Flucker, his uncle (husband of Hannah Waldo Flucker). Bond is in the hand of Hannah Harwood.

Bope writes to his sister reporting that brother John is well. Complains about the continuous rain and states that one of their men was shot. Writes about the rebels destroying a bridge over Green River. Comments that they are waiting for artillery: "...we have only 16 or 20 big guns here..." Asks her to use pen in future letters because pencil is hard to read. Complains that postage stamps are scarcer than money. Envelope has image of William G. Brownlow.

Bope writes to his father from Camp Wood. Reports on a battle with the Rebels and states that 19 men were killed and more wounded in his regiment. Comments that the Rebels have a camp four miles from him and he is sending his father ninety dollars. Letterhead has a drawing of a lion and donkey facing one another with the phrase "ONE OF US MUST CONQUER" underneath. Envelope has image of Union flag.

Bope writes to his mother from Camp Wood. Expresses thanks for the candy she sent for Christmas. Letterhead has a drawing of a cannon and American flag with the phrase "OUR COMPROMISE" written underneath. Envelope has a humorous image and caption depicting soldiers being distracted from their commanding officer due to the presence of a young woman.

Conrad Bope writes to his sister. Comments it is the New Year and they have nothing to do. Brother John is well and in his tent as he writes. Reports he was on picket duty and once the bridge is rebuilt over the Green River, they will march to Bowling Green. Mentions that butter sells for twenty-five cents per pound and asks her to send him some. Letterhead has the logo "United We Stand Divided We Fall" and Kentucky underneath. Envelope has images and wording.

Bope writes to a friend from the Battlefield of Camp Shiloh. Reports he survived the bloody Battle of Shiloh (6-7 April 1862) unharmed. Discusses the battle strategy in depth and the horror he felt: "...we had to step over the daed [sic] and mutilated bodies of Friend and Enemy..." Letterhead contains a drawing of Andrew Jackson with the phrase "Our Federal Union, It MUST be preserved."

Bope writes to his father from the Battlefield of Shiloh, near Pittsburg Landing. Reports that "...some 20,000 men buried who fell in this great battle...", and they expect another attack. Mentions Easter, and notes that the cost of eggs is 30 cents a dozen. Discusses in great detail logistic battle plans and asks him to speak to the hardware man about the pistol he returned.

Title: to Sephronia Fairchild

Fairchild writes to his wife from a camp near Alexandria, Virginia that he is frustrated by the delay of being mustered out. Anticipates he will be home no later than 1 July 1865. Informs that the last of the Rebel forces in Texas surrendered and his old commander, General Winfield S. Hancock, now commands the Veteran's Corps. Comments what a terrible fighter General Hancock was. Reports that a photograph of their regiment will go to New York Governor Reuben E. Fenton.

Title: to Lewis D. Fairchild

Sephronia writes to her husband Lewis asking when he will be discharged. States that the family is waiting and watching for his return every day. States many soldiers are returning home and that all who enlisted under the Act of 1863 (the first conscription act) will get their bounty. The fourth page of the letter is very faded and mostly illegible, but it is from his daughter Eunice and is dated 16 July 1865.

Fairchild writes to his wife Sephronia from Fort Corcoran in Arlington, Virginia. Reports he is ill with fever and dizziness and has little appetite. Says he will be home by 1 October 1865. Comments that his regiment is the last to muster out and they don't know yet where it will occur. He hopes for Albany. The letterhead reads "United States Sanitary Commission."
