The weather has been bad. The regiment moved 16 miles east of their former position at Branch Bridge. The journey, made by rail, proved disastrous as the train let them off in a field with no tents. Two days later another train picked them up and brought them to their current camp where they spent another two days without tents. He has a cold. He mentions rumors of the success of Burnsides' expedition on Roanoke Island. [section dated 2/14/1862] The company moved out last night and took no tents with them. He did not go with them.

He describes his division commander. "I Must Say that I dont think much of the Celebrated Gen. Lander, in the first place, he is a desperatily profane wicked man, and I am inclined to think he cares nothing for the lives of his men, . . . ." He heard a rumor that the regiment may be transferred to Kentucky. He believes Union victories at other places may prevent a battle along the Potomac from being necessary and "I am now inclined to the opinion that that is just What Mclelland [sic] Expects in the end."

Mentions the capture of Forts Henry and Donnelson. He heard a rumor that Jefferson Davis was evacuating Manassas Junction. The regiment returned from its outing to attack a Confederate Camp without having fought. Instead the Union cavalry found the Rebels and successfully engaged them. However, General Lander's report makes the victory out to be his. Lonnie Cole cannot find his regiment but at least he will still be paid. The same is not true for Lonnie's servant.

Predicts that British General William Howe intends to sail for the North River (the Hudson) to connect with [General John Burgoyne's] army: "The North River is, & must be their object- I think the whole of Genl Howe's conduct, must show his weakness- therefore a Junction of the two Armies, is what he will try for & all he can expect this campaine [sic]..." Reports that a ship, the Hero, arrived in Boston to acquire crew, and will sail 14 or 15 August. Notes that the brevity of this letter results from an extremely painful headache.

In two instances, Crafts refused to accept Jackson (from the Continental Artillery) as a higher rank. Jackson asks who actually holds higher rank, Continental Artillery or Continental Infantry.

He toured the estate of the ex-Senator and ex-minister to Spain, C. J. Falkner. Falkner himself fled from the approaching Federal army. He finally received a letter from home and was alarmed to hear that someone was prowling around their house at night. He cautioned his wife to lock all the doors and windows at night. He examined the wreckage of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad yard which the Rebels destroyed. Approximately 42 engines, one hundred cars, a machine shop, turntable, station, and three bridges were burned. The repairs to the railroad should be completed in twelve days.
