The image shows a large house with a fence leading off from either side. Most of the men seem to be on the left, while the women are in a group on the right. Two men stand in the foreground, one on each side, facing each other. The man on the right carries a book. There are two more people on the porch of the house and two leaning out a second story window. Inscription on verso is illegible. Rips in the image have been repaired with tape. Numeric notation on verso: "no 9."

The image shows the tents of the camp at Culpeper in the distance. The town is visible behind the camp. There are fenced off fields in the foreground, the closest of which is just a line of fenceposts without rails. The rails were probably removed by the army to be used in camp fires, although there were regulations against it.

A line of wagons stretches across the image engineers at the head of the teams and drivers seated in the wagons. The wagon covers bear the castle insignia of the engineers. Thirty five men are posed in two lines, with one line standing and another kneeling in front. Ten others are visible in the background. The kneeling soldiers hold rifles and the insignia on their hats appears to indicate that they are either artillerymen or cavalrymen. They are posed under a makeshift canopy of tree boughs and leaves. The two officers stand just in front of the lines on the left side of the image. Two flags and a row of tents are visible behind the group and there are several tree stumps in the foreground. The man on the far left has a drum.

Four Federal cavalrymen are sitting or leaning on posts in the foreground on the right of the image. On the left, multiple railroad tracks lead off to the horizon. There are train cars on the leftmost track which were abandoned by the Confederates upon their evacuation. The track to its right diverges to form two parallel tracks. Farther back, several men on horseback are visible near the center of the image.
