Created by the Continental Congress and printed by John Dunlap. Signed by Colonel Goose Van Schaick in 1777. Contains uniform regulations for commissioned and noncommissioned officers, relates penalties and reasons for the issue of Court Martials. Discusses seditious activity, the organization and assembly of raised troops, penalties for false returns, the liberty to bring provisions into forts, and various other topics. Issued by order of Congress, presided over by John Hancock, 20 September 1776. The back cover states "Articles of War, Col. GV Schaick."

Promise to pay $2,500 by January, 1882 for the Beauvoir plantation owned by Dorsey in Harrison County, Mississippi. The note was to serve as a lien against the property. Davis and his wife moved onto the estate grounds in 1877, so that Davis could write his memoirs. Dorsey died before the note came due, but left Beauvoir and three other plantations to Davis in her will.

Possibly written in Virginia. Howard describes a recent foraging expedition. Reports that a Squadron of Cavalry under Major Beveridge 8th Illinois was sent to his Head Quarters (possibly referring to John Lourie Beveridge). Recently went to "Edsel's Hill." Saw the Widow Fitzhugh, whom he claims has protection from Generals [Levit?], Blenker, and Franklin (possibly Louis Blenker and William Buel Franklin). Notes that the widow has no forage or stock beyond what she needs. Mentions Burt's Station. Comments on stock and supplies, mentioning civilians living near the Little River Turnpike.

Four autograph copies of notes that were sent to Beauregard as telegrams. Telegrams relate to various preparations for military action and the defense of Confederate positions in Mississippi. All telegrams were sent to Beauregard in Tupelo, Mississippi. Discusses protecting plantation boats, the enemy at Holly Springs, the position of repairing machinery, and the need for railroad cars to transport men and supplies.

SABIN 91057. JCB II:372. HOWES S914. Bound with Clinton's "Observations on Mr. Stedman's History of the American War." Includes 15 maps. According to Sabin, this is "generally considered the best contemporary account of the Revolution written from the British side." Stedman was a native of Philadelphia, a Loyalist who served as an officer under Howe, and later an examiner of Loyalist claims for the British government. States that he cannot speak of Assembly business because no one has a good plan to get more money.

Discusses buying a horse, stating "From what I have seen since I came into camp I am satisfied that I must have a much better horse than I at first intended- to be up front with the times- From what you say of the old horse he is just what I want... "To the sensible town of Mexico. A Proclamation." States that Americans are not enemies of peaceful Mexicans and that they respect their religion. Discusses martial law and the power of the army to prosecute offenders. Also mentions that all food and supplies needed by the soldiers will be paid for in full, unlike the guerillas who have ransacked villages and stolen property. Adds that vendors will have the protection of the U.S. Army.
