Porter was the second officer to be promoted to 'full' admiral in the United States Navy (in 1870). At the extreme left stands Lieut. W.B. A photograph of General Marsena Rudolph Patrick and his staff seated on a porch. Patrick is seated at center with hate on knee and holding saber. Patrick was the Provost Marshal for the Army of the Potomic for much of the war. Note a drapery / banner hanging from the front of the porch that is furled. Inscription on verso: "Gardner XXIV 588." A print of a photograph of union officers and enlisted men. The men are posed in front of a large stack of boxes near a military railroad box car. There are three sailors, five soldiers [including two generals], and three men who appear to be in civilian clothes. The man seated at left is Brig. Gen. John Henry Hobart Ward. Painted on the box car are the initials U.S.M.R.R. [United States Military Rail Road]. Inscription on verso: "Ordway-Gardner VI (or IV) 40."

Image is of a young boy, a dead horse, and a Federal soldier posed amid the ruins of an enflamed Confederate building and numerous broken wagons left behind from the ensuing evacuation. An abandoned Confederate freight train remains on the tracks on the left side of the photograph.
