Cook replies to Meserve's letter about two similar Lincoln prints on behalf of the Lincoln National Life Foundation. Cook believes that both of the prints were "made from negatives made from other prints" and asks Meserve if he has any information on the style of camera Brady used for studio portraits. Meserve writes: "You were very good to write to me about your Lincoln photograph, and if you shall come to the city soon I will greatly appreciate your kindness if I can see it. I am always looking for something different in Lincoln photographs, and if our mutual friend Louis Owens shall be the means of finding one through your kindness, it will be a happy thing." Copied Mch 14 1944 from an 8 x 10 glass framed photograph (through the glass) owned by Mr. Kerr Rainsford with his kind permission. Copied from an 8 x 10 photograph (framed - through the glass) owned by Mr. Kerr Rainsford with his kind permission. His photographed appeared to be an enlargment, doubtless made from a photograph of the original ambrotype. It was not reversed. This 8 x 10 negative has been printed to show the face as in a photograph instead of an ambrotype by reversing it. This print is, I think, better & clearer than any I have seen. F. H. Meserve. N.Y. Full plate collodion negative, cracked along the center, with spacer to prevent abrasion. Previously framed, a typed note in the frame (transcribing an inscription in the negative) read: "Admiral David Dixon Porter. Commander Mississippi River Fleet and Mobile Bay, 1863-1864... Carte de visite negative. Crawford elegantly dressed as a civilian, standing with one foot forward and hand draped over a stand. Crawford served as a colonel in the 3d Ga. Inf. C.S.A. He also served as Confederate Commissioner to Washington, and was a member of the Provisional Congress from Georgia. "Original collodion negative by M.B. Brady." Title from inscription on verso. Image of what remains of the Gas Works building with gaping holes, caused by artillery fire, in its walls. The pile of bricks in the foreground is all that remains of the once-famous 80-foot-tall somkestack. Federal artillery used it for target practice until it finally collapsed. Numeric notation: "1021 XI - IV."

Location either at Weyanoke Point or Powhattan Point, near Harrison's Landing, VA. Soldiers are crossing the bridge while cavalry troopers wait to cross. The bridge appears to have a section detached to allow the ship on the left passage. The camera is elevated to provide a nice view of the crossing. Numeric notation: "X 781." See GLC 5111.01.0104.

The first few ambulances have the rear flaps closed, while the three closest to the camera have the flaps open. Later pencil inscription on verso says "July 1863" but the bare trees and donned great coats indicates probably a winter scene. Numeric notation: "XXXI 1146."

Both men wear knee high boots. Two horses are visible in the background. The man on the left sits on a box while the man on the right sits in a camp chair. Possibly scouts? The Library of Congress labeled the image as two men: "discussing the probabilities of the next advance." Inscription on verso: "Genl. Ordway Gardner Coll." Numeric notation: "175 XXXV."
