Small newspaper broadside re-printing Grant's famous notice to Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War, about Lee's surrender at Appomattox. "Let the People Rejoice. Surrender of Lee and His Whole Army. Ring the Bells and Shout Loud Huzzas." With a manuscript note "Printed At Midnight Sunday April 9. /65."

Currier "in the Clerk's office of the District court of the Southern district of N.Y." at 154 Nassau Street. Small repaired tear alongside lower righthand side.

Title: to Sam Chapman

Says he has published an article defending Ulysses S. Grant against attacks by Adolphus Richards. Sends a copy of the article, which he has had published anonymously. The article also criticizes General Custer, whom Richards had defended. Discusses a book written on "our command" which both he and Chapman belonged too. The book was written by Bennet Young. Mosby would later refuse to let Young write his biography, GLC03921.56. An artist for the G.A.R. asked Mosby to if he could paint a portrait of him and his officers in June of 1914, GLC03921.46.

Says the President and the Governor of Ohio are calling the men of Ashtabula County for military service. Says "Men Wanted Now! Maryland has seceded and Washington in danger! One undated image entitled "Brady's Incidents of the War (General McClellan)," was taken by Mathew Brady. Image is of General Morrell's Brigade at Miner's Hill, Virginia. The men are gathered around a tree trunk. Those pictured include the aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Williams, a surgeon named Walters, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred V. Colburn, and Lieutenant Colonel N.B. Switzer. A note below the photograph reads, "Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1861 by M.B. Brady, in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia."

Photographs taken as part of the Hayden survey. This set of photographs was presented to members of Congress as part of a plea to make Yellowstone a public park. During conservation treatment in 1993, the photographs were removed from the album, and the album boards were stored separately. The album had the bookplate of Col. Bernard John Dowling Irwin. Irwin was credited with saving Lt. Bascam in February 1861 and later Gen. Custer.
