Title: to Henry Jackson Knox [incomplete]

Appears to be fragments of two different letters, written by different people. The first letter, written by an unknown author, to an unknown recipient appears to be 2 pages, with the second part of the letter on the third page. Discusses the abilities and accomplishment of an unnamed man. The second letter is written by Lucy Knox to, presumably, her son, Henry Jackson Knox, regarding family friends. The last part, on the fourth page, appears to be a poem.

Title from docket. Docket, written in Knox's hand, also notes: "This was a deed which by a verbal agreement was to be reconvey[ed] on the payment of 17000 Dollars." Henry and Lucy Knox convey the land to Thorndike and Prescott.

Understands his wife's sorrow in his absence. He hopes that when he returns he can live a comfortable life with her. Professes his love for her and his desire to be with her. Notes that he sent her 20 dollars and that he will send more soon; if they are paid on time. Thinks a great deal of his new officer. He notes that they are ready to march everyday and anxious to go out. Wilkinson does not wish to repeat the defeats of Bull Run and Lexington. Sends her a picture of himself.

He has received a letter from his wife's mother that his wife is sick. He is greatly saddened to hear this and hopes she gets better. Wilkinson writes that her life is more precious then his and he wishes he were sick instead of her. Says that they marched with one day's rations and their blankets along the Potomac to Pohick Church. He then writes to his mother asking her to keep him informed of his wife's condition. If she gets worse he will try to return home. Hopes that his mother and her friends will take good care of his wife.

Written from Camp Richardson. Is glad to hear that she is feeling better. Suggests that she sends someone to get her state papers for her so she can recover. Writes that his sister, Wink, is doing well and that he will write her and his mother tomorrow. Writes that they are all awaiting naval exhibitions. There was a hoax that Fort Smythe had been retaken. Says that he will not be promoted to Lieutenant but his time will come soon. Will hopefully come during the winter if there is no change in the situation. Does not like the new Captain.

Written from Camp Michigan, Virginia. Writes that he is much better then when he last wrote. The regiment has been working on building log hovels as their tents do not keep out the cold. States that they will most likely not campaign again until the spring. Thinks he will be able to return home sometimes in January, around the time his wife will give birth. Hopes that they have a boy as their first child. Writes to his mother that he knows she is doing her best to keep his wife healthy and comfortable. Explains that if he dies he would like his wife to be taken care of.

Notes that the other men spend most of their money and do not send it home. States that some of the married men do not show as much affection in their letters to their wives as he does. Writes that he needs his furlough signed and then he will hopefully be able to come home.

Written at Camp Michigan, Virginia. Writes that he is pleased his wife returned his letter so affectionately. Tells her that it is fine if she thinks him "foolish" for writing a love letter to her. Went to visit his friend at the hospital (he was shot in the face after Pohick Church was lost to the rebels on New Year's Day). Is unsure of the status of his furlough and unsure if he will be coming home. He says that this is also the case with many of the men and their furloughs.

Notes that they have not had any movements recently. Attended a dance for the benefit of the soldiers. States that his mother and all of his friends were glad to see him and that he is doing well. The baby cried all night and he barely got any sleep. The baby also looks a lot like its mother.

Decree issued by the Kentucky Circuit Court at Fayette, awarding payment to Clay, who held the mortgage on a property including slaves, which must be sold to pay him. Clay adds an addendum specifying that a young girl not listed on the mortgage be treated as if she had been: "…it being desirable that the mother should not be separated from the child, we do hereby agree that the said child shall be sold with the mother."

Beard & May-…13th and 14th March, 1855… Will be Sold at Auction, at Banks Arcade, Magazine Street, in the City of New Orleans…" Catalogue of slaves, listed by families, individually described: "No. 1 field hand, fine axman, sawyer and hewer"; "nimble of foot in the dance"; "good seamstress, house servant, nurse and cook." Beard was the largest slave auctioneer in New Orleans.

"A Schedule of the negro slaves, the separate property of Obedience Aurelia Runnels, wife of Hiram G. Runnels," lists 29 slaves by name, age, sex and complexion. This may have been produced in anticipation of an imminent duel between Hiram Runnels and Mississippi legislator Volney Howard so that her property would not be affected if her husband should die.
