This document is of Confederate origin and shows Camp Bartow, the Confederate position, in great detail, marking buildings roads and trenches. It also shows the Union position, with an orchard, residence, and artillery. The map notes where the Yankees were repulsed and depicts the headquarters of General H. R. Jackson. Rare lithographic Confederate map "from surveys made by order of Major General J.F. Gilmer Chief Engineer C.S.A.," the cartographer is unknown. Shows Richmond and its environs in great detail, including roads, rivers, railroads, and towns. Probably prepared late 1864, around the time of the commencement of the Petersburg campaign. Jeremy Francis Gilmer (1818-1883) was a U.S. Army Engineer from 1839-1861 and Confederate Chief of Engineers during the Civil War. He was responsible for fortifying Atlanta in 1864.

States "I was in command of all the troops in front of Anderson at the time, and Genl [John] Schofield allowed me to exersize my own judgement in operating against the enemy."

Barbara Frietchie gained fame for telling T. J. "Stonewall" Jackson to harm her rather than the Union flag at the time he entered Frederick, Maryland. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published the poem in Nov. 1863 and it was printed with the carte to raise money for the war effort. The Great Central (Sanitary) Fair in Philadelphia opened in 1864.
