Mentions the capture of Forts Henry and Donnelson. He heard a rumor that Jefferson Davis was evacuating Manassas Junction. The regiment returned from its outing to attack a Confederate Camp without having fought. Instead the Union cavalry found the Rebels and successfully engaged them. However, General Lander's report makes the victory out to be his. Lonnie Cole cannot find his regiment but at least he will still be paid. The same is not true for Lonnie's servant.

He toured the estate of the ex-Senator and ex-minister to Spain, C. J. Falkner. Falkner himself fled from the approaching Federal army. He finally received a letter from home and was alarmed to hear that someone was prowling around their house at night. He cautioned his wife to lock all the doors and windows at night. He examined the wreckage of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad yard which the Rebels destroyed. Approximately 42 engines, one hundred cars, a machine shop, turntable, station, and three bridges were burned. The repairs to the railroad should be completed in twelve days.

Olmstead, a Confederate officer who surrendered Fort Pulaski and was taken as a prisoner of war at Fort Columbus, writes to Union Secretary of War Stanton. Olmstead is concerned that the Union is violating the prisoner of war terms signed by General Quincy A. Gillmore and himself at the surrender. The surrender terms stated that the Confederate sick and wounded should be sent up to the Confederate lines. Jesse Bright of Indiana was thrown out of Congress for supporting the rebellion and acknowledging Jefferson Davis as president of the Confederate States.)

Written immediately following the battle of Antietam (17-18 September 1862), after Lee's troops had withdrawn across the Potomac. They rested after the previous battle before pursuing the rebels, overtaking their rear as they were crossing the water. He has worked with the rebel wounded left in the surrounding farm houses. "They probably lost 15000 men in wounded and killed. Our own loss is perhaps more than half that. It was one of the most magnificent battles of the war. As he prepares to treat the wounded from the Battle of Fredericksburg, an attack launched by 50,000 Union troops at dawn on Dec. 13, he discusses the possibility of being hit and makes arrangements for his belongings. He believes heavy losses are inevitable. The spirits of the troops are high. "If you fancy the approach of such a battle depresses the spirits of men or officers you are greatly mistaken. I have never seen more mirth and joking among the hundreds of officers assembled about this building, which is used as the Hd. Quar. of Gen. Burnside, and within range of the rebel guns."
