Also describes the Battle of Chancellorsville, particularly crossing the Rappahannock River on 28 April, "hard fighting" on 30 April-3 May, and a particularly extensive and detailed entry on 4 May. Also describes the Battle of Gettysburg, especially in the entries for 2-3 July, in which he mentions repeated charges from the Confederate forces which were repelled by the Union forces each time.

Of the Hessians, writes "it is said they show'd the greatest joy when our people board'd the Ship." Refers to another cruiser bound for Quebec with dry goods and blankets. Writes, "I wish to know if it would be agreeable to the generall that I may Inlist some of [the Hessians] in my Regt."

Princess Royal, commanded by Woolsey off Sabine Pass, Texas during the blockading of Confederate ports in that area. Woolsey commanded the "Princess Royal" in the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. After the war, he commanded the Navy Field at Pensacola, where he died from yellow fever.
