Polished bone kerchief slide, etched on front "J. H. Kearsing, Andersonville Prison, 1864." On the back exterior of the ring is etched "Co. D 43rd N.Y.S.V." Kearsing was a prisoner in Andersonville.

Atop the metal tin, which held the biscuit, is a descriptive tag: "Brought From the Rebel Prison at Andersonville, Ga. by William Hersey of the 35th Regiment M.V.M. [Massachusetts Volunteer Militia] March 1865. Presented by G. N. Patten March 21 - 1865." The tin is 7 cm in diameter and 3 cm high. The biscuit is approximately 6.2 x 2.3 cm.

Longstreet comments on how his decision to attack Knoxville was affected by General Braxton Bragg's retreat from Chattanooga to Dalton following the loss at Missionary Ridge. Longstreet could not, however, hold against the enemy and retreated to a position of safety near Bean Station in hopes of gaining an opportunity to stike an enemy column that might approach from Cumberland Gap. Title: [Diary of John L. Barnes, a POW and sergeant in 149th Pennsylvania Volunteers, "Bucktails"]

In the early part of the diary, Barnes writes of frequent drills, hearing firing, corps reviews, pickets, various correspondence (especially with his wife), and, on 9 March, playing ball. There is battle content on 6-7 February, 5-14 May (possible part of the Wilderness campaign), 20-21 May, and 27-31 May. On 1 June, he writes that he was taken prisoner. In the subsequent entries he was marched through Georgia and spent time at Libby. He occasionally writes a forlorn entry, like on 4 July: "When can I leave this place."
