The John F. Weeks collection consists of approximately seventy-five letters written by Weeks to his family during his service. These letters include accounts of the battles of Pea Ridge, Perryville, Stone River, and Mission Ridge. Along with descriptions of life at camp and news about fellow soldiers from home, Weeks often mentions his desire to join the order of Free Masons;. Letters dated after Weeks' discharge in September of 1864, are primarily from individuals in Weeks' Company who write to him with news from the Company/Regiment. Writes that seven confederate spies have been caught and are being held in the guardhouse. Reports that General Fremont has left to cut off reinforcements from Price and McCulloch at Lexington. Writes that he is at the location where Col. Franz Sigel retreated to during the Springfield battle in August. Also writes that his company passed up an offer to receive new rifles so they were given old ones instead. Describes other conditions of camp and the surrounding land. Written at Camp Rolla

Compares prices of produce in Illinois to produce prices in Rolla, Mo. Writes that the Masons; have attempted to get a lodge started but have failed. Has heard rumors that Sigel has resigned. In a post script note he writes that the colonel has been cleared of all charges against him. Written at Camp Rolla
