Title: Memoriam of Capt. G. T. Burch

Broadside created as a memoriam for Captain George Tilley Burch of Co. I, 29th Georgia Regiment who was killed in the Battle of Atlanta. Died at City Hall Hospital on 13 July 1864 from wounds that pierced both his knees in a charge near Kenesaw Mountain. Says he was a graduate of Mercer College in 1861. Joined the army at Savannah, Georgia in August or September 1861 for a 3-year-term. Showed extreme fortitude during the Mississippi campaign and kept up his command in trying circumstances. Virginia electoral ticket endorsing Jefferson Davis for president and Alexander H. Stevens for vice president. Also lists John R. Edmunds of Halifax and Allen T. Caperton of Monroe "for the state at large," various men "for the districts," and Roger A. Pryor "for congress." Indicates that the election was on Wednesday, 6 November 1861. Signed by Fern on verso, presumably the voter who cast the ballot.

Countersigned by the comptroller and auditor. Filled in form of the Department of Northern Virginia, Chief Engineer's Office authorizing the Secretary of the Treasury to pay $30 ($10 in gold bullion) for a reproduction of Lieutenant M. McDonald's map of Richmond (see GLC 5987.20). It is to be made with "chloride or gold" through a "photographic process."

Compiled and drawn by M. B. Grant, lithographed by R. H. Howell, and published by T. A. Burke of the Morning News Office. Shows eastern Virginia (mostly Manassas and vicinity) and part of Maryland. A manuscript note on the bottom by a quartermaster sergeant tells the recipient of this map that they can use it to track his movements, which will take him from Richmond to Fort Monroe and are marked, in part, in pen on the lower right hand side of the map.

Note on upper right in pencil says "Printed at Richmond, Va. 1861" What appears to be a title says "Running Air - "Dixie" Rhymes."

Pro-secession broadside issued by Confederate General Richard Taylor, F.H. Hatch, R.A. Hunter, and Emile Lasere, as the Committee on the part of the Louisiana Delegation at Charleston and Baltimore. Discusses preserving the sovereignty of Louisiana, the Democratic candidates for the 1860 election, the state of politics in Louisiana, and the importance of protecting the institution of slavery. Published by order of the Democratic State Committee. Accompanied by collateral envelope "F. H. Hutch to R. Taylor Esq, St. Charles, New Orleans Augt 29, 1860."

Title: To Tennesseans. Can Tennessee stand alone?

One long sheet. Prints a Tennessee Confederate call to arms and secession published when Tennessee was attempting to secede from the Union. The lower half of this broadside includes a section entitled "Can Tennessee Stand Alone?," which asks the question of whether Tennessee should stay joined to the Confederate states, or attempt to stand alone as a individual, separate nation.

An official call to arms by Alabama Governor Andrew Barry Moore, saying President Jefferson Davis has asked for 3,000 volunteers. Issued after the Confederate government moved from Montgomery to Richmond. Says volunteers must provide their own uniforms, other clothing, and blankets, "for which a commutation will be allowed them in money. "Illustrated with a large confederate flag (7 stars) at top.

From a soldier detailing the little-known Confederate expedition to capture New Mexico Territory. Appears to be two letters printed in a Southern newspaper. Written by H.D. Donald to R.V. Cook at Soloro which is "30 miles above Ft. Craigg." In first letter from 27 February writes from a hospital bed. Says they were in a "great battle" on 21 February 1862 in the valley of the Rio Grande, near Val Verde. Mentions that his captain led a charge against a battery of cannon and carried the day. Says 40 were killed and 140 injured. Says his company lost 1 killed and 22 wounded. Lists each person's…

Partially printed document. Marked at top as "No. 46 Permanent." The register says the "Hetiwan" is owned by George A. Trenholm of Charleston, South Carolina and that Alexander Robertson is the ship's master. The schooner has measurements of: 59 feet 4 inches in length, 26 feet 10 inches in breadth, and 6 feet 4 inches in depth. She weighs 65 tons. Signed in the margin by Robert Tyler, W.F. Colcock as collector of the port, and John Laurens as a naval officer. Listed in Parrish & Willingham 10031.

Published two weeks before Memphis fell into Union hands. Prints a "tariff of prices" on food to prevent a black market. Says "extortioners, of any shape or kind, that they will be held to a strict accountability, both in person and property, for wrecking so mean and cowardly, an advantage over those who natural protectors are on the tented field." Order issued on the command of Colonel Thomas H. Rosser and Acting Post Adjutant Thomas M. Crowder.
