Saltonstall explains how he had a visit with Madame Winthrop and her daughter Mary, who is married to Livingston's son John. Saltonstall tried to persuade Mary to travel to New York, but she was in such poor health that she could not travel. He therefore forwards her regards to Livingston, and expresses hope that she may be cured soon.

Graham sends his condolences on the death of Stephen Van Cortlandt. He also discusses Livingston's suspension from being Collector of the Excise, which he considers to be "a paradox" when viewed with the same eye as reading of Bellomont's "Esteem" for Livingston. Graham also discusses the proposed match between John Livingston and Mary Winthrop, "I am apt to believe that the mariadge is as good as any N England mariadge." Jannet Miller writes to her uncle in an effort to dissuade him from granting his blessing on his daughter Margaret marrying Samuel Vetch. She then tells of young Robert's progress in his studies - "he is good conditioned and lovs to be incouraged" but is not yet ready "to make acquaintanc with any of the Scholars." Winthrop apologizes for his previous lack of written salutations, and begins with expressing his surprise at understanding that John Livingston was interested in the hand of Mary Winthrop, believing that Livingston had visited him on his return home only to express "a Civillety". Having discovered the younger Livingston's intentions in the older Livingston's letter, Winthrop is non-committal as to granting his blessing to this union, as "she is my onely child and most deare to me."
