Henry's regiment marched through Nashville to where they are now camped. He appreciates the letters he has received; they are "worth more than a hundred dollars away down here in rebeldom." A rail broke under a train bound for Louisville and three cars full of men derailed and fell down an embankment.

General Rosecrans is "still entrenching very strongly." Henry saw "one of the greatest traitors of our land," Vallandigham, as he passed through the Union lines to join the Rebel Army. John is not well. Signed with the rank of Lieutenant. Two poems follow in another hand, possibly Margaret's as her name appears below them.

They have had some very difficult marches and battles and have advanced through the Cumberland Mountains "driving the rebels before us." He reports that "Bragg with the rebel army has gone to Chattanooga and will make ready there for another big fight." They have taken many prisoners who seem to be "discouraged about Bragg's movements." John is improving. Henry has been in command of a different company since all its officers are ill.

Henry is sorry to hear that Sophia is not well and regrets that he cannot see her unless the war ends before the fall "which seems favorable now." They marched 65 miles in knee deep mud with after 30,000 Confederates in ten days. Some of the men used the Confederate supplies for the Winchester Daily Bulletin to publish their own version and he encloses a copy. He is in command of another company whose officers were wounded at Stone River.

He remarks that it has been a year and a day since he enlisted and though "there is no more signs of peace now than there was then," he is willing to stay for one more year. He expects that his sister has seen John who is no longer with his regiment. There do not seem to be any Confederates in the area. He is sorry to hear that their friends have died but "such is the fate of war & no one knows how soon his time may come to be served in a like manner." He encloses a photograph of himself.

Henry's "teams were pronounced the best in the Corps by Maj. Gen. Stanley." He commands sixty men of his choice from the regiment. He expects they will stay here for a few months. John was killed and all the men miss him. Henry will bring John's wife John's remains if he can get leave. He remarks that "to be a soldier is to deny yourself of a great many things you would like to do and can not." Written at Ambulance Corps Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.

Writes that rations have been reduced to half, but there is still plenty of potatoes and beef. Urges Ettie to send the pictures he's been waiting for as quickly as possible. Has sent home a selection of pictures of the regiment. Writes that the paymaster will be looking into whether the sentence of a court martial for paroled men is authorized. Thinks that paroled men are not soldiers. Believes there is a possibility that he will be discharged…

Complains about the lack and quality of food at camp. Writes that corn meal and beef bones are the primary sustenance and that the beef the soldiers eat "would stagger an American's appetite". Reports that the farthest East he's been is Dandridge, forty miles east of Knoxville, TN. Complains that he has not heard from his family since Mission Ridge and wonders why they haven't written. Describes the area he is in as very rocky and mountainous; not suitable for him.

Writes that he is having trouble with his lungs but is in comfortable winter quarters. Believes that contrary to newspaper reports, Longstreet's forces will attack in Georgia not Knoxville. Akins his like of soldiering to a cat's love for hot soap and writes that the rebel forces shoot carelessly. Names the battles he's participated which include Pea Ridge, Perryville, Stone River, and Mission Ridge. Gives an account of men in his company that were killed or wounded in Stone River, Chickamauga, and Mission Ridge. Tells his siblings that he will teach them how to make a soldier's holiday…

Labeled on verso of page four as "Exhibit C." Stating the he contracted Ballantyne Bros. for doors window and other building materials. The Ballantynes were not prompt with delivery and cost him a great sum of money in fees and wages because he was unable to complete his work and receive his payment. He mortgaged property to meet his creditors demands. When the Ballantynes "attached" all his property, he came under accusation of trying to defraud his creditors. Also accuses Richard Ballantyne of tormenting and being abusive towards his wife, which caused her to miscarry.
