Circular "To Capitalists" discusses investment opportunities with 14 rules for employment of free Negroes. Ink note: "This paper was printed by the soldiers of the175th NY Vols. on the morning after the capture of Franklin, La by Union forces under Maj. Gen Banks." Inscription of Thos. Beckett, M.D. Surgeon, 175th NY. Wallpaper has three romantic Mediterranean peasant scenes printed on tan paper (pattern # 1958).

Private in the Army of the Cumberland. The letters are written to his wife, Mary, who lived in Macomb, Illinois. (There are 46 manuscript items plus 5 printed items which include 3 newspaper clippings.) Magie also held the position of Brigade Postmaster while stationed in Franklin, Tennessee. This position allowed him to make frequent trips into Nashville, where he bought newspapers for 5 cents each and sold them in camp for 10 cents. "No 8." Describes the defense of Franklin from a Confederate attack. No one in his regiment was hurt. During the battle, he sold newspapers to the reserve troops who proceeded to sit down and read while the battle raged on around them. He warns her to be careful of "greybacks" [lice] which may be on the blankets he sent home. Discusses lending money.

"No 11." Written from camp near Franklin. The regiment has been paid and he expressed $110 home. The rest of the regiment expressed money home to Mr. Blackburn.
