Reports that officers sent 15 to 20 deserters to a prison where they are to be court marshaled. Notes that this is one of the prisoners third time deserting and he is expected to be shot. Writes that the whole camp is on picket, except for himself (the orderly) and the cooks. One of Damuth's friends has adopted birds, and it is Damuth's job to care for them. He dislikes them, but his friend "thinks every thing of them and will talk baby talk to them all the time." Mentions that he is glad "they are raising so many 100 day men," but mentions that serving for a hundred days is not long enough to really experience the soldier's life. Speculates on the end of the war and writes "I want to get home and enjoy domestic bliss for the rest of my days."

Title: [Card depicting the 8th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment's bald eagle, "Old Abe"]

With the story of "Old Abe" on the verso. The live eagle reportedly was brought on all the regiment's marches during its first three years. Gibson gives the "true history": Abe was captured by an Indian in 1861 and presented to an officer. In 1864 he was presented to Wisconsin's governor. He died in 1881 after being shown off at various fairs (including the Centennial Exposition) as a relic of the war. It also indicates that many pictures and pamphlets on Old Abe had been published by Gibson.

He is on the Copper river at the mouth of the Chistochina river 165 miles from Valdez. Mentions being poisoned with mosquito gnats. Believes he has a good chance of getting work from Government contracts next year and will start carrying the winter mail with a dog team in November. Describes the wildlife and vegetation, including the "Indian potato."

I suppose they are grieving at your absence." Ends with a humorous anecdote about Aaron's dog , Leo, getting himself into "mischief" at the butchers.
