Details the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter. Though no author is listed, the accounts are "compiled chiefly from the detailed reports of the Charleston Press." South Carolina state flag, and one of the state mottoes, "Animis Opibusque Parati," Latin for "Prepared in mind and resources," printed on cover. Printed by Evans & Cogswell. Depicts the 12-13 April Confederate attack on Fort Sumter. Illustrates cannonballs soaring toward the Fort, which was situated in Charleston Harbor. Reveals firing cannons emerging from windows of the Fort as smoke billows above the building. An American flag remains flying on the roof of the Fort. The outline of a city (possibly Charleston, South Carolina) is evident in the background. Possibly created by an eyewitness, and reveals similarity to other depictions of the battle that were published in Harper's Weekly.

Consoles Mattie in her husband's absence, stating "you must not be uneasy about your husband--rather glory in his ... order, & determination to do his whole duty to his country ... I assure you your patriotism would never have induced you to say to him stay ..." Title: [Confederate Flag raised over Ft. Sumter]

Extremely rare salt print taken by George S. Cooke of the interior of Fort Sumter after it was taken by Confederate troops. With pencil inscription at the top of the mount: "With the new flag of the south now raised and our Southerners in the stronghold at Fort Sumpter [sic], we will see which sister states join the cause." The flag described is the first flag of the Confederacy, with 7 stars and three horizontal stripes. The image has been published: Davis, Image of War v.1 p.102.
