"No 14." Written from camp near Franklin. Sends home another box of clothes and more money. Discusses his plan for getting out of debt and securing a good living. Lives at the Regimental hospital and describes his breakfast there. He is upset because "this army" [the Army of the Cumberland] cannot get any furloughs.

Embarrassed by the news that several ladies inspected a uniform he sent home, worries about the recently discovered Canada Conspiracy, and pay of a black regiment. "The North Carolina regiment (colored), are to be paid off to morrow, it seems all the pay they are now entitled to is seven dollars. I think this is altogether too little. They work harder than any other troops, and should receive the same pay."

He is well; hopes she is too. He has joined company E of the 42nd regiment. "I just got [here] in time to see a man shot… It was Fred Lammer's brother. He deserted and went to the [Yankee] lines." Another man deserted last night. Two more deserters are to be shot in a few days. Asks for a yarn shirt and a pair of socks as soon as possible. "We are camped 5 miles below Richmond in the woods along the breast works." Union soldiers charged their lines two days ago, but they were driven back with ease. "We can hear [the Yankees] all the time going on wit their music as if they have fine times."…

672 items, primarily letters from and to Leonard Eugene Graeff. Many of the letters are between him and his parents Raymond James Graeff and Susan Prowell Graeff. The items date from 1937 to 1963 with the bulk of the material from 1942-1945. The letters contain day to day details of Leonards life and time in the service and traning. He attended Great Lakes Training Center in Illinois and was stationed in Hawaii after training. Most of the letters disscuss news from home. Of note Leonard also recieved letters from some friends who were also in the military and from their families keeping him…
