A print of a photograph of the drum corps of the 61st New York Infantry. Thirteen drummer boys of the 61st NY Infantry posed in a field with their drums. The front row of boys are seated on their drums with the rear row is wearing their drums on harnesses. "Totten" painted across the top of the entrance. Six Union artillerymen stand between the guns and the gate. The insignia on the forage caps of some of the men indicate Co. D of the 3rd Mass. The soldier standing in the second row on the far left wears a diamond emblem on the upper part of his sleeve that resembles the diamond badge that is part of a first sergeants rank [the inverted chevrons are missing, however]. Title: [Report on Department of War to the successor of James McHenry]

Written shortly after McHenry's resignation as Secretary of War on 13 May 1800. McHenry wrote this report to his successor. He offered his resignation to President John Adams after an angry Adams accused him of working behind the scenes with Alexander Hamilton. Adams eventually selected Massachusetts Senator Samuel Dexter to the post. Report details instructions for the Provisional Army, created in the face of French aggression in 1798. The images derive from the Calhoun Industrial School, founded by the Hampton (Va.) Institute. Most appear to be circa 1895-1905 (based on when Riley worked at Hampton). The images were taken by Richard Riley. The Calhoun School was a social experiment in which local plantations were purchased and land distributed to local blacks. See GLC 5140.02 Album

Writes to Bragg in order to send him a copy of "a special order of the enemy, taken from the Louisville Journal of the 18th." A newspaper clipping of "Special Orders No. 21," is attached. The order is a Union order regarding the building of fortifications around Louisville, Kentucky. The order states that all residents near Louisville must report "the number of slaves they will furnish" to assist in building the works and gives Colonel Dent the power to "impress a sufficient number of laborers." The order was given by Union General Jeremiah Boyle.

Gardner includes a brief vignette in which he describes visiting the site four months after the battle to find the soldier's "skeleton" still laying there, undisturbed and fully uniformed.
