Letter written for Dunphy, who lost both his arms during the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864, to Secretary of the Navy Welles. Also includes a carte de visite (10.1 x 6.2 cm.) pasted to the letter of Dunphy in his uniform with no arms. Wants to know how he can get the medal of honor that was promised to him by Vice Admiral David Farragut. Was on board the flagship USS "Hartford" and says "I was one of the sailors who were wounded in that action and I believe I stand to day the only one in the American Navy who lost both Arms in the late Rebellion." Civil War letter of one of first African-American soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor, and the first honored by the Smithsonian, to "Mother Gibbs." "…the expedition brought in altogether 502 contrabands. I had the good fortune of being instrumental in freeing fifty or more of them…I had the pleasure of depriving our southern brethren of over fifty contrabands, four or five horses with carts, wagons etc [?], five or six teams with carts and a considerable part of their good temper. For all of which I am truly thankful."

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "44. One-Man Stand" depicting a soldier, Melvin Brown, attacking soldiers with a shovel. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative describing the efforts of a "Private First Class Melvin Brown" attacking North Korean soldiers on a hill at Kasan. His whereabouts after the battle were unknown.

Mostly printed photos and obituaries of New Hampshire Civil War Veterans. Some material related to ex-prisoners of war; Sarsons had been a POW and spent time at Andersonville. There is also an article on Thomas Carter, who had been awarded the medal of honor. The newspaper names and dates do not appear.

Photograph of the Civil War surgeon Mary Walker wearing her army Medal of Honor. Walker's medal was revoked in 1917 when conditions for the medal were changed to warrant only battle conditions. Her Medal of Honor was reinstated in 1977. An inventor and advocate of women's rights, as well as a surgeon, she remains the only female recipient of the army Medal of Honor. GLC has a large collateral file of photocopies from the National Archives about Walker's Civil War work.
