Mentions having read in the Herald a letter to General Gadsden by Cripps and is surprised that Monk had not known about it. The letter was later commented upon in the National Intelligencer. Author invites Monk to visit and will leave the arrangements up to her. Discusses personal business. Addressed to Monk in the care of Mr. Benedict. Hand postmarked 7 December, Rippon, Virginia. Includes three cent stamp.

Replies to Harris letter, written and signed 1 March 1904, inquiring if Cleveland "entertained a negro, C.H.J. Taylor, of Kansas, at dinner" at the White House during his presidency. He heard the information in a speech given on the floor of the House of Representatives by Charles F. Scott. The reply, in which Cleveland asserts that "Of course the statement is absolutely false," is written on Harris's original letter. Harris was a reporter at the Senate press gallery.

Writes to his sister from the United States Ship Peacock. States that Captain William L. Hudson of the Peacock supported him in an affaire d'honour. Informs Elizabeth that women he met at a Ball in Valparaiso, Chile perceive Americans as "the people who struck the first blow for Liberty in the New World." States that Captain Charles Wilkes, leader of the Peacock and other vessels on the expedition, wrote for his warrant. Requests Elizabeth to give his love to family and friends in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Norfolk, Virginia.

On stationery from the National Military Asylum, Southern Branch, where Hincks was governor of the National Home for Disabled Volunteers after retiring from the army.

Crocket of San Francisco (not included) who he wants Cripps to assist in deciphering a grant. Is still awaiting the notes from a conference Cripps was to send and explains that he may need to "make war" with Ward, using the notes as leverage. Mentions an upcoming interview with President Pierce and is concerned about his silence on the breach of trust, the center of which Gadsden believes is Ward and his cohorts. Promises that he and his treaty "will stand erect"…

Discusses the strangeness of seeing some men, who have already served three years, re-enlisting while others pay to get out of the draft and "rob thear wives and children." Describes all the fun soldiers have, running foot races and wrestling ("the Officers indulge in it as well as the men").

Writes to his sister. The men are busy preparing for an inspection, because "they say that the Regt that passes the best inspection will do Provost Guard duty in the city this winter." Damuth has received a pair of suspenders from his family by mail and is glad, reporting that clothing goods are expensive if purchased in camp. Damuth is now receiving twenty-four dollars a month. The night before, Damuth went to the theater to see "the Webb sisters…young but perfect beauties." "The entire Brigade took a solom oath never to return to there homes until the last vestage of rebelion is wiped out." Describes a party at a female college in Monticello, "...where the ladies had prepared an excellent picnic for us." Comments on her upcoming marriage and his desire to attend the wedding. Writes about his duties as sergeant. Says they have just received marching orders to an unknown destination. Letter has a Union emblem.
