Howard, Chaplain of the 124th Illinois Infantry, writes an enormous and colorful letter on a Confederate muster sheet he refers to as "a secesh sheet." One on side, writes to Brother Grover. Mentions Clara. Writing after the fall of Vicksburg, Mississippi, states "It is our harvest time...The great sheaf-gathering time of the Army under Grant." Recently received official news of the Union defeat of Port Hudson, Louisiana. Recalls his joy on the fourth (4 July 1863, when Vicksburg fell). Title: [Diary of an African American soldier in 8th Regiment United States Colored Troops, Company G]

Woodlin's brief entries describe camp life, his service with the regimental band as a horn player, several battles, the weather, equal pay with white soldiers, and the famous 54th Massachusetts Regiment, among many other topics. He describes his part in the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, where his regiment arrived two months after fighting began. The middle section of this journal includes blank leaves, followed by several pages of notes and lists. The diary was rebound, but includes the separated original cover.

Title: President Lincoln and General Grant on Peace and War.

Promotes the Union cause. Reprints an interview with Lincoln titled Mr. Lincoln's view of Democratic strategy, and a letter of General Grant dated 16 August 1864 to E.B. Washburne. Grant's letter informs that the Confederacy is very weak and losing men each day. Also printed is the verses to a song, "On the Chicago Surrender."

Corbin informed Douglass that the ceremonies will require reception, military encampment, music, recreation, and other committees.
