He is still in the hospital. Reassures his family that he is getting better. Acknowledges receipt of a package (the cheese was spoiled but he appreciated the brandy). General Banks orders Dederer and two other captains to report for duty or tender their resignations. The captains decide to resign. Dederer's doctor sent a letter certifying his illness and declaring him unfit for duty. [Accompanying envelope appears as if the stamp has been clipped.] [According to Civil War Day by Day, Federal troops at Brashear City surrendered on 6/23/1863.]

Informs the Chevalier that "two pieces of cannon, and their carriages" will be arriving to be presented to the Count de Grasse at the direction of Congress "for the important services he rendered to the United States." Notes that the artist who engraved the emblems and inscriptions took longer than expected to finish. Says he addresses them to Luzerne "in case of the departure of his Excellency general Washington and the Secretary at War from Princeton." Contains some water damage along the left side. Watermarked with three fleur-de-lis inside a crest.

Knox signs with his initials. Knox writes to Lincoln, teacher of his son, Henry Jackson Knox. Is pleased to hear that Levi approves of his son's progress. Has received double pleasure because he knows of Lincoln's character. Tells Lincoln that his future happiness depends on his son's moral impressions. Wants him to be "a man of truth justice candor and humanity, fixed for life to a small farm to the most exalted station." Wants him to accept the enclosed $50 as a token of his respect and gratitude.

Says he previously wrote Knox a letter before he left Gibraltar in which he gave a sketch of the character of the Emperor of Morocco. The day after he left Gibraltar he saw two letters in the possession of James Simpson, the consul for the Empress of Prussia, from two European consuls residing in Tangiers. Describes the horse as not being handsome but says it is a Narragansett Breed, which is the best of breeds. Recommends Knox has the horse saddled immediately upon its arrival. Writes, "Gentle usage will make her a perfect Ladys Horse - but if he is whipped or harshly dealt with she will be good for nothing." "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.

He describes the irregularity and unreliability of mail. He writes that he has bought four yards of red flannel, eight dozen hair pins, paper, large-sized soap but that he has not yet been able to find a knitting cloth. He will send what he purchased with Molly Green. He relates a rumor that the army at Manassas has fallen back. He says that if the army does actually fall back, he will speedily make arrangements to be with her. He writes that he has selected a dress for his wife, baby, and aunt and that he will get them when he receives his monthly pay.

He suspects that his office will close soon and he plans that when he does he will leave for home until "Conscript man [sic]."

He says he has yet to hear about his application and that further delay should be expected with the resignation Mr. Randolph from the Cabinet. He admits that not hearing much from home leads him to think that the family has forgotten him.
