Born in Connecticut, Aurelia moved to Savannah, Georgia in 1821, and later migrated to Washington County, Georgia, and then to Alabama. She wrote sporadic letters to her sister Sarah and her brother, Horatio. Orders to his company of engineers on board the "Clinton" stating that there is no smoking between decks, only officers are allowed in certain areas, roll calls will be at Reveille, Retreat, and Tattoo, inspections will be nightly, gives schedule for the day, and explains proper dress and schedule. Written on board the "Clinton" at sea, during the Mexican War. Remnants of what appear to me a nautical log are pasted on verso. A note explaining the document pasted on front.

Orders his men to "lead the march to the enemy capital," of Mexico City, during the Mexican War. Warns his men not to straggle as "The impotent & cowardly enemy propose to wage the war of the assassin - war to the knife." Promises that soon they will recieve new clothing, rest and payment. It is clear that the weather has made many of McClellan's men sick and weak. Also signed by McClellan for Major General Worth.

Title: General orders - No. 281.

Proceedings of a Court Martial for 29 soldiers accused & convicted "of desertion to the enemy" during the Mexican War. The men, all privates, all pleaded not guilty, all were sentenced "to be hanged by the neck until dead." Three, who deserted before war began, and four others, had their sentences commuted to fifty lashes and being branded. Another was remitted because his son, "remained faithful to his colors." The remaining men were executed on 10 September 1847.

Clerical copy of an excerpt of a Townshend letter dated 6 March 1777. Townshend was Master General of the Board of Ordinance in England. Written to Carleton, the British General and Governor of Canada. Postmarked from Portman Square, in Westminster, England. Says the two cadets were not yet provided for, so he placed them in the "late augmentation" of artillery, so they would not lose their regimental rank by being abroad. Leaves it up to Carleton to place them. Also says there are not sufficient cadets qualified enough to serve abroad and has not sent any out.

Says a few days previously, the General (probably Burgoyne) told him there were a dozen firelocks at headquarters he could have to arm the provincials. Wants recipient to deliver them to the bearer of this letter, a sergeant in Captain Macalpin's Corps. Note at bottom by recipient says he received 16 firelocks brought in by inhabitants and that they were given to Macalpin's Corps.…

Gives permission to David Geddes, the acting paymaster, to travel to Rhode Island to procure funds for the army. Says Geddes needs to come to him to get a passport. Says it is improper for Burgoyne to have a man-of-war pick him up to be returned to England. Says a normal transport will work just as well as a man-of-war, which he does not want entering the harbor…
