Asks for Steven's candid opinion on the subject. Addressee name was added later in red pen.

It later came to light that Banks was involved in disreputable business dealings and Greene wanted to renounce any involvement with him. Both Carrington and General Anthony Wayne were asked by Greene to provide affidavits disclaiming any financial connection between Banks and Greene. Marked an extract of a letter from Philips, Cramond & Co. to George Bell. Samuel Shaw's name is written in place of an address. Declares that the bond they received from Shaw was satisfactory, but he seems to have misunderstood certain terms related to Bell's portion of the contract. Relates how they rectified the situation with Shaw. The third page says that Mr. Cramond asks that Shaw read and sign for the value of some tea at the bottom of the agreement.

Can not yet determine the result, but hopes tomorrow's interview will "insure a favorable Termination of the Difficulties." Reports that from inquiries he has made, the land appears to be excellent. Is charmed with the manners of the people of Boston. Has still not sent the titles to Madame de Leval. Docket notes the letter was received by Knox on 21 January. "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.

Indenture regarding a payment of $10 owed them by Benjamin Walker. First part states the terms and circumstances related to the indenture, signed by William Bingham, his wife and W. Jackson and Grubb as witnesses. Second part is a note of acknowledgement signed by Edward Shippen, a justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The third part discusses the delivery of the indenture and its copies. Dated 15 March 1793 and signed by William Bingham and Richard Parker and John Vaughn as witnesses. All signatures appear to be written in another hand. Noted as a copy.

A certificate certifying that Bradford tendered to Henry Knox a deed of land "lying in the county of Hankock and State of Massachusetts...by a certain agreement made with James Swan." The price was $2 an acre. At the bottom of the document it reads, "the subscriber cannot pronounce as to the validity of the deed nor the right of Mr. Swan to give such a deed.-He cannot accept it - nor pay the fifty thousand dollars."
