A print of a photograph showing the remains of a heavy artillery piece. The unused spherical shells scattered across the image include wooden sabots attached to the shells by tin straps. The top of the shell in the center of the image displays where the fuze would be attached. This type of smoothbore munition was commonly used by Confederate artillery.

Negative by J. Gardner. Taken from "Gardner's Photographic Sketchbook of the Civil War. No. 21" with text accompanying panel. Heavy fighting took place around the church, and after the battle it was used as a field hospital. This photogrpah was taken some time after the extensive battle damage inflicted on the church was repaired [according to the Dates of creation, the image was taken in July 1863]. Two of Gardner's assistants appear on the right side of the church.

A print of a photograph of the destroyed Richmond & Petersburg Railroad Bridge which crossed the James River in Richmond, VA. The R & P railroad stretched 22 miles from Richmond to Petersburg, VA, though today it has been connected to and is administered as part of CSX. The bridge was destroyed by the Confederate Army during the Fall of Richmond as they retreated from the Confederate capital. Image is of a young boy, a dead horse, and a Federal soldier posed amid the ruins of an enflamed Confederate building and numerous broken wagons left behind from the ensuing evacuation. An abandoned Confederate freight train remains on the tracks on the left side of the photograph.
