Believes Knox would rather they proceed according to these new plans than abandon the purchase of the lands altogether. Discusses the importance of good education and mentions that she plans to take her two sons, along with Mrs. Knox and her son, Henry, to look at a school. Hopes Knox will recommend her children for admittance. Speaks of her thankfulness that the Knoxes have been so kind and accepting of her and her family. Comments on their vacation visiting Henry Jackson in Dorchester, and mentions all the friends they have been able to see.

Encloses some business paperwork (not present) sent to her by Mrs. Knox and includes information from General [Henry] Jackson about the paperwork.

Discusses land deals and how anxious she is to hear Knox's advice and information on which path she should take regarding her children's property. Mentions her sons being in the military academy and how they might go to England. Sends her best wishes to Knox's family. Sarah Lyons Flucker was Knox's sister-in-law.

Discusses land deals and contracts. Informs him Jackson is heading his way and will deliver Duer the $50,000 in notes plus interest. The accounts will then be liquidated. Instructs him and Colonel Walker to deliver to Jackson all papers, including all agreements and contracts dealing with this matter. Continues to discuss lands deals concerning Jackson, Royal Flint, [Madam] de Leval, [Jean-Baptise] de la Roche, and [William] Bingham. Dated from docket.

Is on his way home and hopes to see Knox in early October. Postscript claims the letter is genuine as he read it himself. The extract referred to is likely GLC02437.05135.

Sargent was holding her land in trust, which the company's directors did for "all the Lands belonging to Persons under his Agency." Believes it is proper for Sargent to re-convey the lands before he departs for the Western Territory, as soldiers often are exposed to "Accidents." Goes into the details of what she needs. Postscript says her eldest son sends his regards.

Mentions mutual friends, including the Marchioness de Bréhan, who was wary of returning to France due to the "state of affairs" there (the French Revolution). Reports that "We are all peace - Our beloved chief is on a journey to the Eastern States - He is received every where with all possible demonstrations of affection - long may he live to be the cheif of the U.S." Encloses a letter from Catharine Greene for her son, who was studying with Lafayette in France (not included here).

Gives a report of his trip to Alexandria, Virginia, and the surrounding area. Mentions that he had dinner with the Washingtons at Mount Vernon. Says he would have stayed with a Mrs. House in Philadelphia, but the Attorney General, Edmund Randolph, arrived with a large family, so William had to lodge elsewhere. Discusses business he tended to while in Virginia and Maryland, and reports on the success of crops, including tobacco, corn, and wheat, in the area. States that Mr. [Alexander] McGillivray left Philadelphia that morning, and will soon see Knox in New York.
