Adams, in retirement, writes to Tudor, who was clerk of Supreme Judicial Court in Massachusetts. Says he wants to make Tudor laugh. Sends Tudor a copy of Jemmibullero's (probably Samuel Waterhouse) "The Song of the Drunkard," which is not included here. He compares the work to James Otis's Latin and Greek prosody. This is part of a series of letters Tudor and Adams sent back and forth between 1816 and 1819.

Jefferson attacks the Federalists as favoring hereditary rule. Free franked. He mentions that public news draws him from reading Tacitus and Horace, which he calls "more agreeable reading." He also mentions Gov. Fenner of Rhode Island. Jefferson praises Fenner, who controlled state politics for many years. Jefferson writes that he wants to avoid writing things that will be quoted. Apparently Howell asked Jefferson's opinion of his successors. Letter also mentions Republican principles, Federalists, and Jefferson's reading. Letter written in Monticello.

Writing in pencil, General Longstreet, commander of troops at Chickamauga, commends General Hindman on his troops' performance that day in battle. He instructs Hindman to "give them every encouragement and collect them as quick as you can." Referring to General Braxton Bragg, he writes "I have sent to Genl Bragg to ask him to send a Dvn to take your place When it reaches you you can retire to the road and prepare to renew the battle tomorrow." Envelope states "Kept and reserved by Maj. John C. Palmer staff officer of Gen. Hindmans now the property of Maj Palmers Grandson A. J. Gannon."

He also asks Bridge to retrieve Adams' copies of Saunderson's Algebra and four volumes of Busson's works in French.

Mentions Jackson's Valley Campaign repeatedly (p. 196). With later note on the Assyrian Empire at end. Dated March 11-October 27, 1862.
