Informs Colonel Hughes, Deputy Quartermaster of Military Stores (or any of his deputies at Fishkill), that harness makers formerly of Colonel Baldwin's regiment are to join Captain [Thomas] Patten's company "for peculiar public reasons." The company will march from New Windsor the following day. Says he will be "answerable for the measure, to the commander in chief and Colonel Pickering." Knox signs a note on the bottom of the page, indicating "Roman Hazard" should be ordered to join them at New Windsor as soon as possible.

Orders that "Sarah Dean the wife of Moses Dean Sergeant in the Artillery Artificers" receive a ration for herself and half a ration for each of her six children until further orders. "No Rum is to be issued to her or the Children." On verso, an autograph note signed by Daniel Niven, Captain of Engineers, certifies that the document is "a true Copy of the Original."

Relates that all shells and shot will be finished in several weeks. Instructs Knox to inform his wife, Lucy Flucker Knox, that Faesch does not have any tea kettles on hand, but will make some for her in six weeks.

Informs Knox that the alteration of a window "will be attended with a considerable expence; as the windows are all finished & glazed, and the window frames are also finished with all the work that is to go inside which must consequently be thrown away if in case this alteration is put in execution ... " Also states that he already had the curtains and sashes made to fit the specifications of the windows listed in the last plan and suggests a way to adjust the height of the windows so they match. Written and initialed for Knox in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. Writes, "I have received your letter enclosing a return of stores now at Verplancks and Stony Points. The deficiencies, as far as will complete each piece of ordnance to one hundred rounds of ball and twenty of grape shot, shall be sent down as soon as possible - also the carpenters tools as far as they can be supplied. I shall take an opportunity of reporting to the commander in chief the situation of those posts with respect to the guards of infantry who do duty there."

Writes to Pickering, who was his successor as Quartermaster of the Continental Army when Greene took command of West Point just after Benedict Arnold's treason. Expresses his dismay at the state of the garrison at West Point and requests supplies. "On my arrival at this place I found every thing in so disagreeable strain, so much to do, so little time to do it in ... " Advises that he has stopped Captain Seizer's artillery company from marching until they can get more manpower. Informs that more artificers are needed, that many boats need repair, and that winter barracks need to be built.

Colonel Crane commanded the 3rd Battalion of Artillery.
