In Boston they were presented with a flag by the Hon. R.C Winthrop. In New York they were invited to the 5th Avenue Hotel where they heard James G. Brady speak and were presented with another flag. They also passed through Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. At Leesburg, there was an altercation during which 200 men were killed.

Writes that he is able to get vegetables of all kinds at reasonable rates. Reports that some of the boys took down a Secesh flag and put up the stars and stripes in its place. Writes that he has seen the "enticements" for reenlistments and believes the government will get better soldiers this way. Has not heard from the regiment since they began to march; has heard last accounts of them being near Tullahoma. Writes that none of his friends at camp belong to his father's order. He would like to be home helping his father hay, but it would be risky for him to run away.

Envelope has free frank signature of Reuben Eaton Fenton. Writes from Camp Baker. Comments that the roads are difficult to cross so the mail boy delivers the mail only twice a week. While visiting the sick, he knelt down beside a dying man and "wiped away the dews of death from his brow." The man's name was Max Lowe and he died at noon from his own wounds. Crawford, to Lord Clarendon, giving names and tonnage of five American vessels sent to Havana, presumably for the slave trade. The ships are the schooner "Abbot Devereaux," brig "R.B. Lawton," schooner "J.H. Record," barque "Clara B. Williams" and barque "Minetonka." Lt. Davidson of the USS "Dale" reports on his official interview with Commodore Wise, commander of the H.M.S. "Vesuvius," regarding Wise's capture of the slaveship "Bremen" on October 10, 1857. Davidson interviewed Wise by order of the captain of the "Dale," William McBlair. Written on board the U.S.S. "Dale" off the West Coast of Africa. Davidson relays Wise's statement that he boarded the "Bremen" and told her captain that he knew she was a slaver flying an American flag without proper papers.
