Wheeler writes that he was very happy to receive the box they sent him. His regiment marched to Gallatin to fight Morgan. Writes that the new camp is far better than any they have seen since Chicago and far exceeds their camp in Tunnel, Tennessee. Reports that Ruthven Russell has died in the hospital at Gallatin. Writes that some fifty or sixty blacks have run away and come into the camp where General Paine has put them to work. Order one drum and fife added to each of the Captains' Guards. A general court martial will convene the following morning to try as many "prisoners as may be brought before" the seven member court. A Captain Lyman is indicated as President. Wayne was the general in command of the United States Army in Greeneville, Ohio.

Captain Joseph Brooks was tried at a general court martial for not paying his debts, falsifying his word, and for claiming a Virginian named Robert Cunningham was of good repute. The court, presided over by David Strong, acquitted Brooks of the charges. Wayne was the general in command of the United States Army in Greeneville, Ohio.

Report of the General Court Martial of which Mayor Shaylor is President. Lists officers charged with various crimes, and the outcome of the trials. Isaac Lindsay, charged with desertion, was found guilty of absenting himself without leave and sentenced to 25 lashes. Jacob Bruner, charged with desertion from Captain Pierce's Company of Artillery, was found guilty and sentenced to 100 lashes, but due to mitigating circumstances, was recommended to the Commander in Chief for remission of the punishment. A general court martial of Cornet Paul W. Dermott will commence the following morning, and be presided over by Major Burbeck. A Lieutenant Blue has brought charges against Dermott, but Blue is also under court martial for charges by a Captain Webb. News of Lieutenant Jonathan Taylor's resignation. Notice of an election for a pay mastership of the 4th Sub Legion. Wayne was the general in command of the United States Army in Greeneville, Ohio.

Dermott was court martialled on charges disobeying orders, contempt for superiors, mutinous and seditious conduct. He was acquitted of the charges and ordered to be released immediately. Pardon of Thomas Youell, who had a death sentence. Remits corporal punishment issued against Joseph Cross, Ebenezer Walker, and Edward Saxton, and orders them to return to their companies. Orders Pay Masters to make returns for Hunting Shirts for detachments under marching orders. Specifies changes in commanders. Orders a general court martial convened tomorrow for as many prisoners as can be brought before it. Wayne was the general in command of the United States Army in Greeneville, Ohio.

Countersigned by John Mills, Adjutant General on p. 5. Report of the General Court Martial trial of Edwin L. Harris of the 1st Sub Legion held from 17-23 November 1795. Harris is charged with fraudulently obtaining money from the public. The orders list the specifications of the charges against him, including repeatedly charging and receiving money from the United States for his pay, rations, and subsistence as an Ensign in the Legion when he knew he was not entitled to it or had already received it. Discusses the significance of their correspondence. Describes his daily activities. Reports accompanying rioters from the New York Draft Riots to the old capitol prison to await court martial. Writes that after they see their new quarters, the prisoners won't be so quick to riot in the near future. Adds that the draft ends in Washington tomorrow and there will be much rejoicing. Addressed to "Maggie." Written from the Cliffburn Barracks.

Replies to Maggie's letter about her serious cold and admits his deep fear of losing her to tuberculosis. Mentions his recent cold and his home remedy to cure it. Assures her that if she needs anything he will try to send her money if he can. Promises to send her another Chronicle and a long love letter. Written from the General Court Martial Rooms. Handwriting is more elegant than the first three letters, though there are similarities in style and signature. Same handwriting as GLC05522.04.

Title: General orders - No. 281.

Proceedings of a Court Martial for 29 soldiers accused & convicted "of desertion to the enemy" during the Mexican War. The men, all privates, all pleaded not guilty, all were sentenced "to be hanged by the neck until dead." Three, who deserted before war began, and four others, had their sentences commuted to fifty lashes and being branded. Another was remitted because his son, "remained faithful to his colors." The remaining men were executed on 10 September 1847.
